15 & 16 - Robert Alexander McKim (1838) and Elvira Eleanor Gould (1836)

Robert Alexander McKim (b., Mercer, PA, Sept. 10, 1838 - 1906) always told the census-taker that he was either a farmer or a carpenter, but his death certificate said civil engineer, and his grandson Hollis wrote:

Robert was a carpenter, cabinet maker, barn raiser, and civil engineer who, with his father and son, built a lot of the houses and barns around Mercer. He also did a lot of county surveying work and laid out the plans for Zelienople and South Sharon, which is now Farrel. My dad and I frequently went with him to survey land and carry chains, etc.

Elvira Gould (born in Mercer, PA 1836, died 1866) died relatively young, when her son, John (#7) was only 4. Fortunately, at least once in her short life, she sat for a photo portrait.

Robert McKim remarried after a few years and had more children. R.A. McKim’s name can be seen as owner of large property on an 1873 plat map of Mercer.  The blue arrows indicate property of some of your other Mercer ancestors.
